In short- the neural system in an anxious state does not care if you grow, feel happy, make money, have fulfilling relationships etc. It wants to detect danger and protect you from discomfort or harm; physical, mental or emotional. When you're trying something for the first time or revisiting something you haven't done in a while or done repeatedly-- do you experience doubt? procrastination? OR do you get excited for the unknown?
In session, I've been comparing the neural system to Chat GPT. You cannot ask it to write a story about Holland and expect a story about France. Your neural system is following your lead! If you're telling yourself that no one likes you, identifying as a people pleaser or labeling yourself as anxious-- your subconscious will back that story up as a well-intended but ineffective way to stay safe. If you're in fear of not having enough money, your neural system does not know if you have a roof over your head and food in the fridge. See what I mean? Primitive.
Here's a few counter mantra's to reduce cortisol (stress chemical) and ideally create more momentum toward the stories you actually want: "I'm safe" "I'm safe to make mistakes, change my mind, or speak my needs" "I can handle and grow from any obstacles that arise" OR asking "is there is evidence to back up the story fear is creating?"
